Citation Guides

Below are the most commonly used style formats for writing research papers.  Each link will take you to additional information, including examples for citing basic sources, such as books, journal articles, and web documents.

ACS (American Chemical Society) - Most often used by scholars and students in chemistry.  

APA (American Psychological Association) - Most often used by scholars and students in psychology, political science, and other social sciences.  

APSA (American Political Science Association) - Most often used by scholars and students in political science.

ASA (American Sociological Association) - Most often used by scholars and students in sociology.

CBE (Council of Biology Editors) -  Most often used by scholars and students in the biological sciences. 

Chicago / Turabian - Used in many disciplines. 

MLA (Modern Language Association) - Most often used by scholars and students working in the study of literature and languages.

Most often used by scholars and students in psychology, political science, and other social sciences.  The fifth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychology Association is available in Grafton Library,  Ready Ref. BF76.7.P83 2001.

Most often used by scholars and students working in the study of literature and languages. The most recent copy of MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (Ready Ref LB2369 .G53 2009) and the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (Ready Ref. PN147.G444 1998) are available in Grafton Library.

Chicago and Turabian Styles 

Used in many disciplines. The most recent copy of The Chicago Manual of Style is available in Grafton Library, Ready Ref. Z253.U69 1993. Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, which is adapted from The Chicago Manual of Style, is also available, Ready Ref. Z253 .U69 2003.
