2013 City of Richmond Summer Internship Program
The City of Richmond Internship Program is a mayoral initiative that is available to current undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in an accredited college or university. The program is also available to recent college graduates who will enroll in a graduate degree program within twelve (12) months of employment with the City.
Interns will serve in eight-week (8) appointments during which they will:
•Gain knowledge and skills pertaining to City department projects.
•Reflect upon their personal experiences through reflective journals and papers.
•Interface with City of Richmond senior executives in their respective departments.
Internships will be offered by the following City departments for the 2013 summer term:
Department of Economic and Community Development
The Department of Economic and Community Development is seeking a graduate student intern to assist with the following:
•Creating databases; entering data; and analyzing data on programs and projects
•Knowledge of MS Office 2003 or 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
•Assisting staff with various projects as assigned
Preferred Qualifications should include:
•Understanding and interpreting data
•Organizational & communication skills
•Working well with other co-workers in a team environment
•Ability to work independently
Applicable Majors/Disciplines: Students pursuing graduate coursework in Planning/Housing, Community/Urban Development, Political Science, Public Administration

Department of Public Works (two internships available)
The Department of Public Works is seeking an intern to assist with the following:
•Provide support to Finance and Fleet Operations to assist with audit reports, year-end inventory and cost-accounting analysis
•Provide general office support (data entry, filing, scanning documents, etc.) supporting Finance and Fleet Operations
•Proficient user of MS Office 2003 or 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
•Provide miscellaneous research and trend analysis as assigned
•Support the department with special events or assignments as needed
Preferred Qualifications should include:
•Knowledge of economics and accounting process
•Knowledge of relevant financial policies, laws, rules and regulations
•Good communication skills both verbal as well as written
•Analytical and logical thinker
•Detailed-oriented
•Planning and prioritizing, and organizing skills

•Excellent organizational skills

Office of Minority Business Development
The Office of Minority Business Development is seeking an intern who will be responsible for the following:
•Researching and monitoring best practices and current trends of nation-wide minority business enterprises
•Reviewing the Department of Minority Business Development legislation to ensure policies and practices are in alignment with local, state and federal laws and regulations
•Researching current trends of nationally recognized minority business enterprises to ensure the Department of Minority Business Development remains competitive
•Fielding incoming calls and visitors to appropriate personnel
Applicable Majors/Disciplines: Business Administration, Public Administration, Psychology or related fields.
